Build a School in the Cloud

Thanks to my colleagues who steered me in the direction of this TED talk by Sugata Mitra. I am inspired by Sugata who thinks outside the box, asks the big questions and whose imagination renders him unafraid to envision a different future and be willing to do the ground work to set it in motion.

Educators as Curators

Re-envisioning Modern Pedagogy: Educators as Curators from Corinne Weisgerber

Thanks to Corinne Weisberger for sharing this visionary model of what teachers of today can provide for their students. There is certainly a substantial time and energy commitment up front but the payoff in preparing ourselves and our students for innovations that come daily is well worth the effort. The 8 step approach simplifies the many and overlapping thought processes that accompany the beginning of resource creation. The idea of information coming to you is appealing and critical for time-challenged educators.

Transliteracy - The Conversation

I love this graphic, The Art of Listening, Learning, and Sharing for its visual impact, its simplicity and for providing examples of how to integrate a sometimes overwhelming range of platforms into classrooms and school libraries.

The idea of creating a network of colleagues to collaborate (PLN) can make the task of providing our students with the widest range of tools possible less daunting. Stay tuned as the research and testing continues!

Transliteracy

Transliteracy is defined by Sue Thomas of the Transliteracy Research Group as "the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media from signing and orality through handwriting, print, TV, radio and film, to digital social networks".

This concept highlights how quickly the meaning of being literate is changing.

My interest in and focus on this concept was stimulated by one of our Teacher-Librarians whose role has dramatically expanded from focusing on literacy, the ability to read, write and interact to transliteracy, which includes so much more. It is exciting and reassuring to know that in Yukon our Teacher-Librarians are working hard to incorporate new technologies into the daily lives of their students.

Periodic Table of iPhones

Two things I like - the iPhone and Scientific American combine in this interesting infographic to depict the meeting place of science and technology, specifically how elements in the periodic table find their way into your iPhone to make it "light, bright and loud".
