Transliteracy is defined by Sue Thomas of the Transliteracy Research Group as "the
ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools
and media from signing and orality through handwriting, print, TV, radio
and film, to digital social networks".This concept highlights how quickly the meaning of being literate is changing.
My interest in and focus on this concept was stimulated by one of our Teacher-Librarians whose role has dramatically expanded from focusing on literacy, the ability to read, write and interact to transliteracy, which includes so much more. It is exciting and reassuring to know that in Yukon our Teacher-Librarians are working hard to incorporate new technologies into the daily lives of their students.
